Two reasons that explain why you open your wardrobe and close it immediately afterwards, idle and disappointed.
How many times do you get ready to go to work or go out for a drink and suddenly you find yourself slumped in front of your wardrobe like a tragic heroine of ancient writers crying that you have nothing to wear. It has happened to all of us and it really is a situation you don't want to be in if you have a little time to prepare. However, having nothing to wear when you have a closet full of clothes in front of you doesn't mean you're greedy. A survey proved why it can be difficult to find the outfit of the day, even if your options are seemingly endless.
According to the research in question, led by Jordan Etkin (from Duke University) and Aner Sela (from the University of Florida), this happens when a garment is worn on different occasions. In more detail, if you had bought a dress to wear to a party, which over time you started wearing it to work, you might lose interest in that outfit. "When people perceived more variety between a product's use situations, they liked the product less," the researchers said. In essence, "I have nothing to wear" occurs when you have bought some clothes for specific occasions, but over time you have incorporated them into your everyday wardrobe.
But that's not the only reason you feel like there's nothing in your closet you can't wear. While you frequent the stores and always end up buying something on your way out, that doesn't mean there's any strategy behind the move. In particular, your mistake is that you don't think about what clothes you have or where you could fit the particular item or accessory, you just buy it without having the bigger picture in mind. Instead, what you can do is sort your clothes into looks, knowing what you're really missing that won't just fill your closet.
The next time you think you don't have anything to wear, it's a good idea to do a good cleaning in your closet, so you can make room for the new clothes you really need, which will complement the outfit you've envisioned.
