The following basic tips are vital to our good health.
The liver is an extremely important organ for the body. It "works" constantly and hard by "filtering" the blood, producing bile, which is necessary for the digestion process, and regulating the level of sugar in the blood. The liver receives about 13% of the total blood supply to the body and performs about 500 different functions. It is a "multifunctional" organ in that it plays a dominant role in metabolism and performs various body functions, including glycogen storage, erythrocyte destruction, plasma protein synthesis, hormone production, and the removal of toxic substances from the body.
"Weapons" are prevention and early diagnosis
According to the general acceptance of the scientific community, a decisive role in protecting our health is played by prevention and early diagnosis, i.e. the preventive, screening of our health in combination with the advice of experts. And for the liver, prevention and early diagnosis are important "weapons" in our quiver to achieve its health.
But what does "watch my liver" really mean?
The experts of the Hellenic Society of Liver Studies give the following useful tips for liver health:
1. Maintain a normal body weight (BMI 20-25).
2. Exercise at least 3-4 times a week (brisk walking 45').
3. Avoid daily or occasional but heavy drinking.
4. Use medications only as directed by a doctor.
5. Get tested for hepatitis C if you were born between 1945-1980 or have/have used intravenous drugs.
6. Don't ignore elevated liver enzyme levels.
7. If you suffer from advanced liver disease, join surveillance programs for the early diagnosis of hepatocellular cancer.
